 5 Myths About Laundry Busted
At A Touch of Class, we're proud to offer laundry valet service to individuals, businesses, and residential communities throughout Marin County and San Francisco. As a full-service high-end dry cleaner, we're experts in caring for and cleaning even the most delicate premium garments, and experience has taught us the do's and don'ts of laundry time and again. Unfortunately, though, there's plenty of misinformation out there. With that in mind, here are 5 common myths about laundry that we're busting once and for all!

#1. Cold Water Can't Fix Stains

While it's true that high temperatures can help break up certain kinds of stains, washing with hot water can go both ways. Many fabrics and garments can be damaged by hot water and should only be washed cold, and despite what you may have heard, cold water is just as capable of removing stains as hot water.

#2. You Don't Need to Sort Clothes If You Use Dye Magnets

Dye magnets are designed to absorb dye, and some believe that throwing a dye magnet in the wash means you don't have to separate colors and whites – but don't fall for this trap! The only way to prevent white clothes from staining in the laundry is to wash them separately. Dye magnets or no, you should still sort your laundry by color.

#3. More Detergent Means More Stain Removal

If you're washing a particularly heavily-stained or soiled load of laundry, it's common to have the instinct to double the amount of detergent you use. But the truth is this won't yield any increase in stain removal: you should only base your detergent use on the size of the load. Instead of adding more detergent, try painting detergent directly onto nasty stains before the wash or ensuring you wash stains before they dry.

#4. Detergent Heals All Stains

Another common myth is that only detergent can fight stains – but this couldn't be farther from the truth. One of the best ways to fight stains is actually to not let them dry and wash them immediately. The sooner you clean the stain, the easier it'll be to get off.

#5. Tumble Dry Works for Everything

One of the most easily destructive laundry myths out there is that you can put any clothing in the dryer if you leave it on a light setting. At the end of the day, some fabrics and garments are simply too fragile for the stress of a tumble dry: even light settings may have the garment spinning at a high RPM, and the friction of rubbing against other clothing can leave some fabrics in tatters. While many clothes are fine in the dryer, there are some that should only be air dried.
